Fremen are the desertdwelling sand warriors, the Free Tribes of Dune. Sandworms can be slain, or drowned in water which is toxic to their species.įremen are the other indigenous population of Arrakis. Sandworms can grow from tiny sandtrout to worms more than 400 meters in length. The local Fremen population respectfully worship the enormous worms as “Shai-Hulud,” the Worm God. At the first signs of an impending worm attack, a Sandmaster or Duneman will call “wormsign,” alerting those involved in the Spice harvesting operations to evacuate. Needless to say, maintenance of vehicles and structures is adversely affected under these conditions.įar beneath the surface of the sand, giant sandworms cross the dunes - unseen and unheard. Ultraviolet reflection eventually blinds the unprotected eye, though the local Fremen (Dune’s nomadic population of sand-dwellers) blacken their eyes with stain to reduce these effects.Īll who venture into the deserts must do so wearing special stillsuits, built to preserve and reclaim the natural moisture of the body recycling it into catchpockets, where it is made available for ingestion through a network of tubing. Gaseous clouds accumulate in the lower sinks and dunes - through the quanats, or canals, which cross the surface.

Windstorms ravage the surface of the planet with speeds exceeding 200 km/h often generating intense electrical storms. To most human life forms, Dune is considered hot and oppressive in the extreme. Mountains are impassable to all vehicles but may be crossed by infantry units at certain locations. The rugged mountains are formed by layers of rock and give the otherwise featureless planet surface its only notable elevations. Sandworms avoid and can not cross rock formations.

Rock formations are the only terrain features that provide acceptable building sites. Dunes are difficult to traverse, especially for ground based units. Giant sandworms are a danger when traveling across sandy stretches.Įxtensive sand dunes are formed by the constant windstorms that plague the surface of the planet. Most vehicles on Arrakis are varieties of sandcrawlers, vehicles specially designed to travel upon this terrain. Obviously, sand is the most common type of terrain found on Dune. Spice generally occurs along the surface and is a reddish-orange color which distinguishes this priceless terrain from normal sand. There are five major types of terrain on Dune. Rock shelves and mountain ranges rising through the dunes provide the only possible building sites on the planet. The sands are dangerous, shifting constantly and unpredictably. Miles of barren deserts hold little more than basins, dunes, and the occasional out-cropping of rock. When the Fremen planetologist, consultant to the Harkonnen Governor, was asked how long it would take to transition Dune into a verdant, water-giving planet, he presented the figure of 500 years. There is no climate control of the planet. The surface of Arrakis is covered by endless dunes.

Inter-mission chats with your house mentor added flavour and set the stage for Command & Conquer to build these into full FMV briefings. The Ordos went off-script, but the idea of a faction that could turn the allegiance of enemy units was neat. Worms circle your harvesters and can plague battles, encouraging you to move tanks between patches of safe rock. The desert is always trying to reclaim your buildings, and your bases feel like temporary outposts at best. It’s understandable that future RTS games wouldn’t require you to sluggishly lay foundations before building structures, but it’s perfect for the punishing desert climes of Arrakis. I used to jump with fear when a roaring sandworm popped up to chomp a spice harvester. A rippling of sandy pixels hints at the presence of a terrifying sandworm. Suddenly those little red boxes are powerful Harkonnen battle tanks. Clever little thumbnails in build queues give your imagination just enough to work with. It’s also difficult to capture Dune’s weathered vision of the future from a top-down perspective and just a few pixels per unit to work with. Real time strategy games would be quite different today if Westwood had chosen to adapt the novel differently, and an RTS is an unusual framework for a story about power and political intrigue.
